About the HD Images

All of the Pixels By Paul images are high resolution, on both the iPad and the iPhone. In fact, the same images are used for both the iPad and the iPhone. The 3x2 or wider landscape oriented (horizontal) images are all 768 pixels high and at least 1024 pixels wide. Some of the wide panorama images are over 2000 pixels wide. Similarly, the 2x3 or taller portrait (vertical) images are 768 pixels wide and at least 1024 pixels tall.

This means that all images will be absolutely sharp when they are enlarged (if needed) to fill your iPad or iPhone screen.

About Paul Richman

Paul Richman is Pixels By Paul. He has been a photographer all his life, and a professional photographer for a decade. To pursue his passion for imagery, he left his first career as a Computer Scientist (Ph. D. from Stanford) with over 20 patents, a dozen articles in prestigious math and computer journals, and many years service at AT&T Bell Laboratories.  This technical background prepared him well for the technical aspects of his second career as a fine art photographer.

Paul has a permanent gallery at the Millennium Harvest House Hotel in Boulder, and another permanent display at the Sloat Law Offices in Boulder. He has displayed his photography elsewhere in Boulder, including Wright-Kingdom Realty Offices, and in Beaver Creek Galleries.

Paul typically sells large prints, usually 24" x 36" or wider. His artwork adorns the walls of many homes and offices in the Boulder area, throughout the United States, and internationally.

All of Paul's extensive portfolio can be seen in this app. Here you will experience his passion for landscapes, flowers, wildlife, architecture, sculpture, portraiture, studio work, and more. Paul adds new content frequently, so keep an eye out for this.

In addition to his personally directed fine art work, Paul has done assignment work for various companies. His images have won local, national and international contests, and he teaches photography and Photoshop to private clients.

Paul currently uses a Nikon D3x 24MP camera and pro Nikkor lenses to achieve the fine detail and rich colors in his large prints.

Order Prints - 50% Off

The 50% discount is an introductory offer for owners of this app, good for a limited time.

We offer fine art prints of any of the images in this app in 18" - 24" height, and various widths, depending on the image. Paul makes these prints himself with the latest technology Epson 7900 printer and Epson HDR inks, and he signs each print. Prints are 100+ years archival. Print prices on the PixelsByPaul website start at $195 for prints up to 36” wide, and increase by $4/inch of width after that. Thus the standard 24" x 36" print is $195, and a 24" x 60" print of one of this app's wide panorama photographs would be $291. However, for a limited time, app owners get 50% off of this pricing. Just mention the "PxP Retina Art" coupon code when placing an order.

You can also order prints mounted on wood, as shown here:

These mounts are made from premium eco-friendly wood, creating a durable, long-lasting way to preserve and present artwork. Art is mounted on an acid-free 3/8" thick surface, finished with a beveled edge, and laminated with matte laminate to protect the print and offer a glare-free view. The print lays absolutely flat, with no ripples or waves as seen with other framing techniques. We offer mounted fine art prints in 18" - 24" height, and various widths, depending on the image. Mounted print prices on the PixelsByPaul website start at $295 for prints up to 36" wide, and increase by $6/inch of width after that. Thus a 24" x 60" mounted print of one of this app's wide panorama photographs would be $439, if ordered though the PixelsByPaul website. However, for a limited time, app owners get 50% off of this pricing. Just mention the "PxP Retina Art" coupon code when placing an order.

You can order prints on canvas that are gallery wrapped, as shown here:

These prints are done on thick canvas print stock by my lab. The image is reflected on all the edges of the canvas, which are stretched and wrapped around a 3/4" wood frame, for hanging. The print lays flat, with no ripples or waves, and the surface is treated for protection and to minimize reflections. I offer these canvas wrapped fine art prints in 18" - 24" height, and various widths, depending on the image. Gallery wrapped print prices are the same as for mounting on wood, as shown above.

To order: Contact Paul Richman by email at Paul@PixelsByPaul.com.

How to Enlarge Images

When viewing an image, you can double tap anywhere on the image to show or hide the buttons.

Manually:  When the buttons are in their hidden mode, you can manually enlarge images by "pinching" outwards, as well as dragging the image around on the screen.

Automatically:  When the buttons are visible, one of the buttons lets you automatically change the size of the image in various ways very quickly by just tapping the button:

- Actual Size: This lets you see the entire image. If the full image does not fit exactly on the screen in the device's current viewing orientation (vertical or horizontal), then black panels are added to the sides or above and below the image, as required.

+ Enlarge Crop: This enlarges the image to completely fill the screen, cropping it as needed to accomplish this. If cropping is needed, just the central portion of the image is shown.

+ Enlarge Stretch: This enlarges the image to completely fill the screen, but rather than cropping the edges, it stretches the image as needed. Panorama images distort in an exotic way with this mode. Horizontal panoramas are distorted allot in your device's landscape (horizontal) orientation, and even more in your device's portrait (vertical) orientation. Try it! It's cool!

These buttons work as described in both of your device's orientations: landscape (horizontal) and portrait (vertical).

How to View New Images

With this app, you get an unlimited subscription to Pixels By Paul. Paul adds new images frequently, and when he does, they will automatically download to your device when you browse images within the app (as opposed to looking at the Favorites you have personally selected). To see all the newest image within a folder, use the NEWEST sort (with the Sort button in the upper right corner of the screen). To see all the newest images, use the NEWEST sort when viewing the ALL Images folder.

How to Rotate or Crop an Image for Wallpaper, Etc.

If you want to use one of the images as your wallpaper, but you want to crop and/or rotate it first, here's how:

1) View the image you desire on the Browse tab.

2) Hold your iPhone in its portrait (vertical) orientation. (Either orientation works with the iPad.)

3) Click the FAV button, and add the image to one of your Favorites folders. (You can create new Favorites folders by tapping the "+" button at the top of the page.)

4) Click the BACK button to go back to the Browse screen.

5) Click the Favorites tab at the bottom of the screen to go to your Favorites folders, and tap on the folder with the desired image.

6) Tap on that image thumbnail to view the image.

7) Tap the CROP/ROTATE button in the bottom left of the screen.

8) Rotate and crop the image as desired and then click the Preview button in the top left of the screen.

9) If you are happy with the result, then click the Save, Copy or Send button to use the resulting image. Save lets you save the image to your Photos app library for use as wallpaper from there. 10) If your image still needs more rotation or cropping, just click the button and do more.

Send via Text Messaging

Because you need a MMS-compatible cell provider for text messaging, this section is for iPhone users only, not iPad or iPod users.

The Pixels by Paul app provides three different methods for inserting multi media images into a text message:

Send Method - This is by far the simplest method.  Just find the image you'd like to send, tap on the Send button, then tap the Text Message button which will then run your iPhone's Messages app.  Pick the person you want to send the image to, and then tap inside the text input box and then select Paste.  Pros:  Quick and easy.  Doesn't clutter up your iPhone's Photo Library with images.  Ideal for "one-off" images you will not use often.  Cons:  Must run the Pixels by Paul app each time you want to send an item.  Possible compatibility problems when sending to certain non-iPhone cell phones.

Copy Method - This is essentially the same as the Send method in that it uses the iPhone's internal clipboard to Copy and Paste images.   This method simply provides the flexibility of copying the image to other applications as well, not just the Messages app.

Save Method - Stores images in your iPhone's Photo Library.  Pros:  Can quickly insert items without running the Pixels by Paul app each time.  Ideal for items you send often.  Fewer compatibility problems with non-iPhone users.  Cons:  Can't use for sending Animations.  Can clutter up your iPhone's Photo Library.

- Enter who you'd like to send the image to, make any changes to the Subject line, enter any message you'd like to include, and then tap Send.

To post images from the Pixels by Paul app to Facebook (your wall, Friends' walls, Pages or Groups), simply:

- Find an image to send from the Browse tab.
- Tap the Send button to move the image to the device's Clipboard and take you to the Send options.
- Tap the Facebook button.  Enter any message you'd like to send along with the image and tap Post.

Facebook Symbols: Along with any text message you post, you can include symbols to your post, by tapping on the Symbols button on the keyboard.  This allows you to use text, symbols, and an image, all in one post.

Facebook Posting Limit:  Facebook limits the number of posts a user can make using 3rd party applications. If you get an error saying you've reached your limit, you will need to wait 24 to 48 hours before Facebook will let you start posting again. PLEASE NOTE!  This is a limit placed by Facebook, not the Pixels by Paul app.  PLEASE don't give us a bad review for this, as we have no control over this.

Two Facebook Storage Options:  When you send an image to your own wall, the Pixels by Paul app will present you with two different options for storing the image that you're posting.  You can choose to post only a "Link" to the item, or you can choose to "Save" the item in your Facebook photo library.  The Link option will produce a slightly smaller thumbnail of the image on your wall, but has the advantage of not cluttering up your Facebook photo library with the images you post.  (NOTE:  Facebook ONLY allows the Link option when posting to Friends, Pages or Groups.  The Save options is ONLY available when posting items to your own wall.)

Facebook Status Update vs Profile Wall Post:  Here is how the Pixels by Paul app works.    If no image is attached, then it updates your Facebook "status" with whatever you enter.  So, if you tap the Remove Image button and then enter a message, that will show up as a status update.  You can use the symbols in your status update (just tap on the Symbols on the keyboard).  However, if you have an image attached, Facebook doesn't support updating your status with an image.  So, what the Pixels by Paul app does in this case, is post the image and text you enter to your profile wall.  Your friends and others will see that, since they see anything you post to your own wall.

To Logout of Facebook:
1. Tap on the Send tab.
2. Tap on the Facebook button.
3. Tap on the Remove Attachment button (if there is one)
4. Tap on the Logout button.

To "tweet" images from the Pixels by Paul app to your Twitter page, simply:

- Find an image to send from the Browse tab.
- Tap the Send button to move the image to the device's Clipboard and take you to the Send options.
- Tap the Twitter button.  Enter any message you'd like to send along with the image and tap Tweet.

Twitter Symbols: Along with any text message you post, you can include symbols to your post, by tapping on the Symbols button on the keyboard.  This allows you to use text, symbols, and an image, all in one tweet.

Note:  Twitter does not support posting images in a "tweet," so what the Pixels by Paul app does is hosts the item on our site and attaches a short URL link to your tweet which followers click on to view the image.

To Logout of Twitter:
1. Tap on the Send tab.
2. Tap on the Twitter button.
3. Tap on the Remove Attachment button (if there is one)
4. Tap on the Sign Out button.

Set Wallpaper

Currently there is no support for developers to change your wallpaper directly from within their app.  So, to set your wallpaper, save the image you're interested in to your local device by tapping the Save button in the Pixels by Paul app.  Quit the Pixels by Paul app and run the device's Photos app.  Look in the Camera Roll for the image you just saved.  Select that image and tap on the Share button (icon showing a square and arrow).  Tap on the Use as Wallpaper button.

Removing Watermarks

The Pixels by Paul app adds a small "watermark" to the bottom of each image (i.e. "Sent using Pixels by Paul iPhone app"). We use this to let others know about the Pixels by Paul app. However, if you're using one of the paid versions of the Pixels by Paul app, you can elect to remove the watermarks.  Simply go to the Help tab, tap on Settings, and then toggle the watermarks on and off by tapping on the Watermarks on/off button.

Tips, Tricks & Shortcuts

Tip #1:  Quick Copy - If you see the image you want to use while in the grid mode of the Browse tab, you don't need to expand the image and select Send or Copy.  Instead, just hold your finger on the image for a second or so, and it will copy the image to the clipboard.

Tip #2:  Emailing Multiple Images - When you use the Send tab to send images while running the Pixels by Paul app, it makes the image an attachment (which is the only way Apple currently allows 3rd-party apps to do this).  This means you can only attach a single image per email and it will always appear at the end of the email as an attachment.  However, if you would like to attach multiple images to the same email, and have them stay where you place them, you can use your device's regular Mail app, copying and pasting multiple images into the same email.  You can also place the images where you like using this method.  (NOTE:  How the email will appear on the other end is also a factor of the email service someone is using, such as Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc. and the client they are using to view the email.  For this reason, they may or may not see it exactly how you sent it.  This has nothing to do with the Pixels by Paul app.)
